Default RE: The iron and sodium levels in my recent oil analysis, I compared them to one 30k miles ago...

...and they're in-line with what was found then.

August 2005 with 78.5k miles and 8k miles on M1 0w40:

Iron: 57ppm
Sodium: 19ppm

August 2002 with 49k miles and 6.5k miles on M1 0w40:

Iron: 49ppm
Sodium: 16ppm

Makes me think there's not much cause for alarm...

Default No, I wouldn't be too alarmed at these numbers just yet...

What I would think about doing though is experimenting with different oils to see if that improves the situation. Maybe if your climate is not too hot try German Castrol Syntec 0W-30? I just had good results with that (see report -- first two samples are M1 0W-40, third is GC 0W-30).

Have you tried posting your report to BOBISTHEOILGUY and asking them what they think? There are some very oil savvy people there.

Default Already on M1 5w40 T&SUV now...

...I won't go down to a w30, but might use GC 5w40 next. That's what the dealer put in my wife's 2.7T allroad.

Default Could the suggestion of coolant be the alcohol/water injection?
