I have a bad driver's upper front ball joint on the control arm. You can jiggle the wheel 1/4" back and forth because of it. I have one on the way to replace it, but yeah, it's quite annoying hitting a bump and having a clunk sound.

look for some play in the suspension while you're tugging at the wheel (both fronts should be in the air when you're doing this).
