Default Afterrun coolant pump mod results. (Long)

I decided I would try the afterrun coolant pump mod and log before/after to see for myself if there is any difference.

Procedure:

1-Get car to normal operating temperatures via one hour cruise home from work.
2-Log starting temperatures of coolant and oil.
3-Shut down car.
4-Log temperatures every 5 minutes for 20 miutes total.
5-Restart car.
6-Log temperatures every minute for 5 minutes. (Allowing fluids to circulate past temperature sensors.)

Results:

Starting temps.
Oil = 225ºF
Coolant = 214ºF before, 221ºF after mod

Coolant (Before mod /After mod)
After 5 minutes.
232 226
After 10 minutes.
226 223
After 15 minutes.
221 216
After 20 minutes.
226 212
Start Car
203 194
After 1 minutes.
203 198
After 2 minutes.
205 199
After 3 minutes.
207 201
After 4 minutes.
208 203
After 5 minutes.
210 203

Oil (Before mod/After mod)
After 5 minutes.
216 216
After 10 minutes.
213 208
After 15 minutes.
204 192
After 20 minutes.
200 183
Start Car
After 1 minutes.
200 187
After 2 minutes.
200 192
After 3 minutes.
204 200
After 4 minutes.
206 200
After 5 minutes.
208 200

Conclusions:

For the first 5 minutes after the car is shut off there appers to be almost no difference at all. There is only a delta of 6 degrees in coolant temp and zero in oil temp.

After 10 minutes the delta in the coolant temps shrink to only 3 degrees. The oil temp delta grows to 7 degrees. After this point the afterrun coolant pump/fans shut off.

Here is the interesting part.

After 20 minutes the coolant temp delta is 14 degrees, and the oil temp delta is 17 degrees.

After the car is started you can see the stock setup takes 3 minutes for the oil temps to start to climb and continue up to 208º after 5 minutes. Whereas the modded setup takes 3 minutes to stabalize to 200º and then stays there.

Overall interesting, but not drastic results. The only downside I could see is that the pump and fans run almost every time you shut off the warm/hot car now. So even if the car is warmed up and you shut down, wait 15 minutes, then restart and shutdown again, the pump and fans will run for another 10 minutes. This may drain the battery more than normal, but overall probably not a big deal. And not too many people stop/start the car in this manor anyway. Although it is possible doing this and allowing the pump to now run for approx. 20 minutes could allow for even lower oil and coolant temps to a point. I checked after the pump shut off the second time, and coolant was 199 and oil was 175, but this was after my first tests, so the car also ran for 5 minutes in-between.

Default what was the ambient temp when taking readings before and after the mod?

Default nice logs. I saw similar results from someone else's logs prior to installing mine

Default where are you getting oil temps from?

Default Only place possible...oil temp gauge.

I figure two thickness of the needle fit between each mark.

Therefore possible readings are approx. 150,158,166,175,183,192,200,208,216,225 etc. you see what I'm getting at.

You can also account for exactly halfway between two marks, like 187.

Default One more advantage I'd like to think / hope with this mod is as the system runs, it's removing at

lease some of the heat stored in the turbos to reduce the amount of oil coking in the turbos and surrounding lines.

Maybe a way to really check the effectiveness is to measure the turbo's casing temps with and without the system running...

Default A fan won't prevent oil from coking...

it's takes higher temps than this for oil to coke in the turbos, and if you're shutting down the can at those temps, there is no chance in hell that a fan will cool them down before the oil cokes.

Best case scenario...the engine bay cools down faster, buying you some extra life out of many of the components under the hood that are susceptible to aging as a results of heat exposure.

Default Maybe I'm misunderstanding but I thought the fan ran because the afterrun pump circulates coolant

through the turbo housings, thus cooling the turbos.

Coking is also not always a function of heat but also of flow and/or restrictions in that flow and properties of the oil (unfortunately I get stuck doing oil analysis at work).

Default My understanding too...the whole point is to circulate coolant through the bearing cartridge.

One way to measure effectiveness, as you state, would be to measure the temperature of the bearing cartridge.
