Default What could cause misfiring described inside:

While looking at VAG blocks 015 and 016:

Cylinder 1 misfiring HEAVILY (80+ on the counter)
Cylinder's 2 & 3 misfiring slightly (2-7 on the counter)
Cylinders 4-6 have zero misfires.

This is ONLY happening at idle/coasting. When there is load on the engine, the misfires go away.

I've tried swapping the output stages, the cylinder 1 & 2 coilpacks and putting a new plug in cylinder 1. The misfires don't move at all and remain as described above for all cases.

No obvious vacuum leaks or anything of that sort that I could see.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Default I just had very similar problems and dealer replaced the coilpack boots. Now, I am getting....

no misfires at all it any cylinders. I had the same kind of symptoms. Some how 4 of my spark plugs worked loose and damaged the boots.

Now that's what they did say was the matter, but they also replaced my MAF. So, if changing the boots doesn't work then try MAF.

Default There are *several* S4s having the EXACT same problem. Other than that I don't have much

insight. Try seafoam, maybe you have alot of carbon buildup. Try switching plugs, moving coilpacks, leakdown test, etc.

Default That's probably what I need to try next. Swapping injectors is a PITA though. :(

Default Well, I swapped the coilpacks and boots from cyl. 1 to cyl. 2 and nothing changed...

so I wouldn't think the boots are the cause.

Default Read

Try Seafoam first.

then try running higher Octane gass and see if that changes anything.

If you are taking your injectors out maybe you should have them all cleaned.

Default I've used Seafoam in the past (probably 10-15k miles ago). I run only 93 oct.

The injectors are greentops and have only been on the car for ~20k miles (and were new when I put them on) so they really shouldn't need cleaning.

Default Pretty easy actually... about 15min of work if you do it smartly...

M/T car description:

- Pull fuse 28, start car, car will die slowly w/o fuel
- Take off Y,
- Unplug the N75/249 plugs,
- Remove the driver boost sensor line(cut clamp),
- Detatch the Evap line(right beside the PSteering resovoir, quick release),
- Detatch vac/boost line on mani(2001.5) at the rear right,
- Detatch FPR line(manifold rear, cut Clamp)
- Detatch pass valve/line(F hose location on A/H, cut clamp),
- Unplug injectors
- Unbolt/Wiggle fuel rail until all 6 injectors pop out of the mani,
- Fold injector rail/injectors to the pass side and hang with a clothes hanger or other...

Do whatever you need to the injectors at this point. Funfun.
