Default I'm considering changing my intake manifold from the older type to the newer (2001.5+) type. Does..

anyone know exactly what is involved?

Benefits other than getting rid of the F-hose?

I've read that the design is better with a lower ceiling which concentrates the flow to the better velocity stacks (per a post from Blitzkrieg some time back). Also, I read that there is a better runner setup.

When I tear my car apart for a new timing belt this summer, I'm installing phenolic intake manifold spacers so this would be the best time to do it.

How much work is involed?

Default I'll tell you after next weekend. I can then tell you exactly what is needed then. However...

keep in mind there are different types of newer intake manifolds. DAP knows all the little codes and such. But there are two different types of newer intake manifolds. You want the one off a TIP Allroad 00-02 being if you just get a new manifold you will have to cut the back of the manifold where the vent system hooks up to it and resolder/weld a plate in and tap in some new hose connections. On the AR TIP manis they are already there and it's a bolt up (kind of). There is some plumbing that needs to be rerouted from the little spiderhose cannister. But I think I have that solved. Like I said, I will be taking plenty of pictures and part #s, parts needed, etc. I will be doing it July 4th weekend for my relaxation. I'll be doing phenolics also. Along with an EFK, finishing my IC mister kit, new plugs, and p/p tb to match the mani. I'll keep ya posted.

Default Looking forward to that writeup. Manifold part numbers:

There are 3 different 2.7T manifolds. All begin with the part number 078 133 201 but they have different suffixes.

AE suffix = 2000 & early 2001 six-speed (the "bad" one)

AC suffix = 2000 tiptronic and early A6/allroads. Best upgrade for those with the AE manifold. Vacuum ports match up with the AE model but the runner/plenum design is the newer style.

BC suffix = 2001.5 S4 and later A6/allroads (both six-speed and tiptronic). This isn't as easy to use as an upgrade for the AE since the vacuum ports are different. You'd need to modify the back of the manifold to make it work in a 2000/early 2001 car.

Default I swapped mine over... Right before the TBelt mishap (D'oh)

You won't need anything but the mani and gaskets if you use the AR one. The brake booster line is a bit snug. My homemade F-Hose lives on in this configuration.

No need to do it with the timing belt: there's virtually no overlapping labor there. Ok, maybe 5min to take off the bipipe.

Default Oh, and the AR one has an extra port I used to directly plumb the boost gauge/avcr tap :)

Default Do you have to redo the heads or did it just skip a tooth?

Default thanks - pardon my ignorance - what is the "AR" one - AR?.....

Also, I'm installing phenolic intake manifold spacers when the car is all apart so doing it at that time should save some time.

Default I'd rather waste the time and effort on porting and polishing the old manifold...

more bang for the buck. As long as I have a samco or mtm or piggie setup I can live with an fhose (IMHO.)
