Finally yanked out the SPEC2 clutch. UPDATED with pics.
After months of fighting my SPEC Stage II clutch, I finally called it quits (car was undrivable). It would not disengage and made the car a real treat to drive.
I installed an OEM RS4 clutch and all is well now. I can't believe how smooth the shifting in the car is now. It's like a new car. I had forgotten what that was like...to have a normal shifting S4. =)
The cause of the SPEC failure was the pressure plate. The pressure plate had adjusted itself (Self-Adjusting Clutch) which caused the clutch to engage on the floor. It got worse, until eventually it would not disengage at all. Flywheel and disc were fine, but the release bearing wasn't. The plastic buffer ring on the release bearing was cracked in one area, with a piece missing. Also, upon removal of the transmission I noticed that the finger geometry on the SPEC pressure plate was not correct. It appeared to have unequal clamping force. Maybe this is due to a poor heat treatment of the fingers...not sure.

Notice anything wrong here? Look at the fingers. This is exactly how it looked once the tranny was dropped. PP was torqued to factory spec too. That was a new in box OEM dual-mass flywheel.

Here's what the release bearing looked like. Notice the piece that was missing. Nice.

This shows the position of the Self-Adjusting Clutch mechanism. You can see that the plastic ring with the stepped ramp has ratcheted itself all the way around. This caused the engagement to be on the floor and then it still would creep forward.
I'm very happy with the RS4 clutch at the moment. So happy, that I have a few of them in stock for others to enjoy.
