OK...I've been around pretty long, but just bought VAG-COM at Waterfest and can use some helpful hints in data logging....
I plan to remove the EVO intake in favor of a DarIntake and would like to log the MAF & air flow.. I would like to contribute FATS data...I know I need to log block 003, but that means nothing in real terms. (I can calculate the internal rate of return on a mutual fund, but I don't understand the VAG-COM interface yet..lol). I'm looking for a basic How-To, somewhat simpler than the VAG-COM manual. The archives offer nothing that helps nor does the VAG Forum...

With car running
1)Open VAG-COM 2)Click on "Select" Button under the heading "Select Control MOdule" 3)Click "01-Engine" Button 4)Click "Measuring Blocks -08" 5)Either type the block number you want to record (in this case 003) in the box under group or use the up-down buttons just to the right of it. As soon as you enter a value or use the Up-Down buttons you will see the measurement values appear in the boxes to the right. You can choose up to 3 different blocks. The more you choose the more time there will be between data points because it has more things to check. 6)Click "Log" 7)Enter name of file you want to record the data in, in the box that appears, or just use the one they give you. If the name is the same as a file that already exists it will not overwrite that file, VAG-COM will just append the new data on at the end of the existing file. 8)Click "Start" Car is now logging data. I usually don't do this until right before I put the pedal down. That way you don't get a bunch of extra data to delete out of the log. 9)Click "Stop" No more logging.

1) Hook up the cable to your serial/USB port and start VAG-COM.
2) Click "Select" under "Select Control Module" ![]() 3) Click "01-Engine" under "Common" 4) Click "Meas. Blocks-08" under "Basic Functions" ![]() 5) Enter "003" in the first Group text box, make sure the other two are blank to get the highest sampling rate and click "Log" in the bottom right corner. ![]() 6) Enter a name for the file in the "File Name:" text box and click "Start". ![]() 7) Put the car in third gear and set the cruise at 45 MPH. 8) Floor it through third gear. Repeat this a few time, preferrably in both directions. *Hint: each time you press the space bar while logging, it inserts a marker into the log. I usually hit the space bar right before flooring it, so that I can find the relevant part of the log later on. 9) When you're done, hit "Done, Close" which will return you to the screen in Step 5. 10) Click "Done, Go Back" which will return you to the screen in Step 4. 11) Click "Close Controller, Go Back-06" which will return you to the screen in Step 3. 12) Click "Go Back", which will return you to the screen in Step 2, then click Exit. 13) When you get home, find your VAG-COM Logs directory, I forget the path, but it's something like: C:\Program Files\Ross-Tech\Logs 14) To chart your log, open the CSV file in Excel and follow my VAG-COM Charting How-To. The How-To is written for a boost log, but it's applicable to a timed FATS log also. Make sure RPM is on the Y-Axis, and Time is on the X-Axis. 15) Once you've got your log in a nice chart, right click on the line (sorry, I don't have nice pictures for this) in the chart and select, "Add Trendline...". 16) From the Add Tendline wizard, select "Polynomial" and change the order to "6". Select the "Options" tab and check "Display Equation on Chart". Then select "OK". This will add a best-fit line to your data plot and add the equation of the line in a text box on the plot. Select the equation and copy the formula into a new tab in Excel. 17) Now, modify the formula such that it calculates the RPM (Y) from a given time (X). I'll try to make a nice visual to show how to do this, but basically, if you paste the forumla in cell B1 and change "x" in the formula to "*A1^" and delete the "y" in front of the forumla, entering an RPM value, hypothetically say 1000, in cell A1 will return the time that 1000 RPM occurs on your plot. 18) Now, to figure out your FATS time, you need to use the Goal Seek tool to figure out at what time your car is at 4,200 and 6,500 RPMs (I could be wrong on those number, but I think that's what the FATS test is). To do that, you have to have the Analysis TookPak installed, clck the "Tools" menu, then select "Add-ins...", and make sure the Analysis TookPak is checked. 19) Go to the "Tools" menu and select "Goal Seek...". "Set cell:" should be "A1", "To value:" should be "4200" or "6500", depending on which value you want to calculate, and "By changing cell:" should be "B1". Click ok. This will find the time at which your car was at the specific RPM. Now, just take the two times and calcualte the difference, that is your FATS time. It also helps if you include the time and date of the above runs, what fuel you were running, and some weather data (temp, humidity, pressure). The weather data can be found on the web. HTH.

how does it change if I am logging another item...
For instance..if I want to log air flow before and after the DarIntake mod? Where do you find a list of the block numbers and what they correspond to?
