I had a horrible time with my extended warranty company over a basic repair and am now thinking of trying to get a refund of some of my money and using the remaining cash for a turbo upgrade (preventative maintenance
!).The cash will most likely cover the parts but the labor is another issue. I want to see what it takes to do it myself and am wondering if anyone has a step by step guide on what they did for their swaps. I searched the tech section but no luck. Thanks! Rob |

of little details that people would complain about being missing.
You have 3 basic options. 1)pull the motor/tranny as a unit with a cherry picker. Take off the front end(bumper, rad support, etc), disconnect the electrics and place on top of motor(including the ecu plugs), disconnect shifter connections, unbolt AC compressor and swing aside, unbolt cv's/driveshaft, tranny mounts(I recommend removing the "ears" instead of just unbolting the mounts), unbolt engine mounts, stock dps can usually stay on. Pull engine forward a bit so you can reach the slave cylinder and unbolt it. Now you can r&r turbos/inlets. Make *damned* sure you use new crush washers on the oil/water/air fittings(enjoy the lack of space and too many closely spaced lines here). Do not overtighten. Don't forget to remove the shipping plugs on the new turbos!! You can fill up the turbo housing with oil once you attach the oil returns(not totally necessary as you'll see later). Double check all the fittings/bolts. Pull the tranny off if you like. Tranny jack helps here. The flywheel bolts are a pain. Reinstall the tranny. Reinstall motor (remember the slave cylinder!!). Rebolt up everything. Everything. Do a pressure check. Now. Seriously. Reconnect everything (don't forget the engine ground!). Leave ecu disconnected (and ignitors as well). Turn engine over for a while in 15sec bursts for maybe 2 minutes. This should get some oil everywhere necessary. Reconnect and enjoy. Break in the clutch appropriately, but the turbos don't really need a break in. Don't just go crazy though! Give it some time and LOG EVERYTHING! 2)You can remove the whole tranny/engine/subframe assembly if you like. You'll have to hang the calipers and still disconnect the slave cylinder. 3)Unbolt engine from tranny. Do the same as everything else before. I prefer #1. It takes a while, take your time and don't rush. I know its sort of short, but I hope that helps. |
