Default Help!: Radio quit today, and now I can't connect with Vag-com

4 hours into a 4.5 hour drive today my radio stopped working while listening to the radio. It completely quit, and will not turn on. I didn't spill anything on it or anything, it just stopped. So tonight I try to hook up the Vag-com and see what's up. I can't even connect with the vag com...what the heck is going on? I checked the radio fuse, and it's fine. Thoughts?

Final Update: The dealer spent many hours (think many $'s) and finally tracked it down to the cd changer. I switched out the cd changer (there is tech article on it here on audiworld), and now all is good! Thanks for the help guys even though it didn't turn out to be anything seen before.

Default One of your K-lines could have caused a short. Check the radio fuse first, or call Ross-Tech for -

support. Here is something related to an Aftermarket Radio I saw on their site, could be a similar problem. Try posting on the VAG forum for more help.

Default You are right, K-1 is shorted to ground...would a crapped out radio cause this?

Or would you suspect something else shorted and killed the radio?

Default I only diagnose, I don't repair ;-) There are so many wires back there, the ground for the radio has

very little slack, I would pull out the radio and make sure it is secured. Other than that I would start testing all of the harness pins on the back of the radio to make sure you are getting voltage through them. I believe it is marked K in the diagram on the radio. Also there might be a fuse on the back of the radio that may be the culprit. Try the audio forum, I'm sure someone has had this problem. They are slow to respond so be patient.

Default Update:

I pulled the radio, and it's turns out that the fuse on the back of the radio had blown. So for future reference, there is a fuse back there, and if it blows you lose the ability to connect to the car with vag-com. It is a brown 7.5amp fuse for those who are interested. I replaced it, and now it works fine (so far). I need to find out if there is something else wrong with the car that caused the short.

UPDATE: The short was in the CD changer.

Default Nice, glad I could help. I don't know if there is a relation with the O2 sensor though, but I would-

keep monitoring it. It could lead to throwing your car into limp mode in the future. When is the last time you changed your Air filter?

Default Thanks for the help, you were spot on correct.

I changed the air filter last August, so it should be good. I believe it gets changed anyway at my 64,000 mile service coming up in 1,000 miles. I think I'll just go ahead and do the VW O2 sensor thing to replace the one that seems to be going out. The car hasn't been performing quite as well as I would expect for a stage 2+ car, so I'll see if that helps. I may also replace the coolant sensor because my idle has been a little off.
