Default 2nd Gear

I seem to be having more difficulty shifting into 2nd when going from 1 to 2. Really have to work it to get it in there, especially when I am trying to do a sprint to 60mph. All other gears are fine and easy to get into.
I am completely stock.
Anyone have any ideas/suggestions??
Thanks

Default Seems to be pretty common - I just jerk it back harder than other gears

Default Warranty'll cover it eventually - either now or later, doesn't matter to me

Default Depends how hard you hit it I guess : ) I need more force to shift into second, but I don't think

I'm damaging the synchros. I could be wrong and short a tranny in a few thousand miles...who knows.

Default common hang-up especially on 2001's. here's a fix...

I think Audi beefed up the synchros on late 2000's/early 2001's and newer S4's so the 1-2 shift happens with a bit of a snag.

I've driven early 2000's and they do a 1-2 shift smoother without any tricks.

On my 2001, I get good results by simply not completely lifting off when doing the 1-2 shift. Note that I'm not powershifting at all... clutch still goes in as usual except I don't completely lift off throttle. I usually get smoother and faster 1-2 shifts that way.

Give that a try.

Default My second on my 2.8 is tough to and the SS exagerates it. Sometimes though it goes right in without

hitch. other times it feels like it hits something along the way. Seems lots of peeps experience this so it makes me worry less.

I also noticed on other cars I've drivin in the past did this in second gear.

Default Re: 2nd Gear

What happens to the 1st/2nd gear cluster is really minor, but it does cause shifting problems, even to the extent that the trans won't go into 1st or 2nd.

The sliding sleeve that goes over the 2nd gear engaging teeth (for lack of a better terminology, that is what we call it in a Porsche box) develops a very slight burr...the tolerances are so close that the "burr" can cause a glitch or even cause the trans to not even go into gear because the slider is in an interference fit over the engaging teeth.

A simple fix (yeah...simple....once the trans is out and apart)is to take a die grinder and put a very slight chamfer on the edge of the sliding sleeve and the edge of the engaging teeth...then reassemble the transmission. The only part you would actually need is a small gasket and new trans fluid.

We had this happen to our transmission at the Spoeedvision GT race at Laguna Seca a couple of years ago. We pulled the trans, chamfered the parts and put it back together again...no problems after that.

I think that Audi used to replace the entire trans under warranty, but they may now go in and replace the ist/2nd gear clusters. The parts could be repaired, but I am sure that they just replace them.
