you will be surprised how good the diesel is. I really like the low end tourque. its awesome on twisting roads and hill climbing. you should test drive an ml320 cdi to have an idea of how the engine will preform. Now compile that performance with the sportiness and the tech of the q7 and you will see what I mean.
For me its not about mpg because if you can afford the car, you can afford the gas.

you squash it until it pops. CIE Compression Ignition engine. In a modern diesel you inject the diesel at very high pressure into very squashed air (about twice that of a gasoline engine) and it explodes. If you spill diesel on the ground and throw a lighting match into it ...it just goes out.
ICE Internal combustion engine. Fuel air mix ignited by a spark Gasoline or petrolium spirit is basically distilled oil mixed with gas. It is closer to alcohol and much more volatile than diesel or oil. Spill some of this on the ground and throw lit match into it ...it says woof and you get burnt as the expansion is greater than the distance you can throw a flaming match. (BTW it is only the vapour off the evaporating Gasoline thats goes bang at less than 10% mix with air). Its components break down or seperate in a diesel engine and damage the injector system (about 100 times air pressure) it also burns too hot and can cause permanent damage that way too. Diesel traditionally on the other hand clogs or oils up Gasoline engines making huge amount of black smoke as it is not burnt properly. The other problem is it will destroy yor catylitic convertor. Diesel pumps have much larger nozzles that do not fit into gas tanks so it is pretty rare to mix them up this way around. Despite popular belief diesel is much more environmentally friendly than gasoline as it require very little refining and its combustion produces less CO2

true about lower C02 though. When they realize that the climate isn't changing because of manmade C02, but that we are using up resources and polluting the air in a combination of ways, then I might start listening to some 'Green' politicians. They subsidise farmers and don't bother to enforce water pollution laws and then scream at you for buying a car that you need to fit your family in

I'm not really interested in getting a V8 TDI if it's going to get the same gas mileage as our current V8 gas engine.
Now if I get way more torque and better mileage to offset the extra cost, then yes we'll be going diesel for our next car. But my wife will probably keep the Q for 5+ yrs.

Even with the improved mileage of the diesel the issue with cost per gallon and the limited gas stations that have diesel makes it questionable!
