Default StartupRacing GT Coilover Kit Impressions

This 2006 A4 2.0T is a daily driver and needs to perform exceptionally well on the street. I have a different car for track excursions, so ultimate street performance is the target here.

Here I selected Vogtland to build our height adjustable suspension kit. It comes with plated steel shocks and light VVS Vogtland springs. Front springs are progressive (490 to 590 lbs/inch) and the rear springs are linear 510 lbs/inch. Shocks are perfectly matched to these springs and without the guessing associated with more complex rebound and bump adjustable suspension the ride is just perfect. Over the weekend I had the opportunity to experience these over rough city streets and smooth highways. This kit outperforms the OEM sport setup without being to harsh or jarring, even with 19" wheels.

Once installed I waited one week to get the car aligned and corner balanced. Corner balancing is possible with height adjustable suspension, and it ensures optimal handling. I insist that after installation of a new suspension one needs to get the car aligned. Corner balancing is optional and many will argue not needed for a street car.

Handling is much improved and body roll is reduced. Body motions are very well controlled and the car feels much more responsive. One of the places where I test my suspension is an off ramp by my house (exit 18 of I-90E for locals). With OEM sport suspension I was able to take this exit at 70, with this kit I have gone 85 and I could have gone faster. I just did not have the guts.

Of course in addition to greatly improved handling, the car is also lowered. I started with the front and rear at the same height - 25.75.

I realized that I do not have any good pictures of the car lowered. So, I will update this post in the next few days. (After I wash the car.)

I am really enjoying this upgrade, and I can honestly recommend it to anyone looking to improve on the OEM suspension with a setup that is stiffer but not jarring. For people auto crossing these cars I also recommend a rear sway bar.

Installation:

We did the suspension and brakes at the same time. Both took about 6 hours to install. Spring compressor is recommended for removal of springs, but otherwise the install is very straightforward.
