Audi parts 101... lesson 1 ((wiki))

A part number has several sections... we don't have run-on sentence part numbers with random characters in them. Actually our parts numbering system is very neat and tells a lot about the item usually. The system is very logical too, numbers aren't much different looking than phone numbers. Everything has a meaning and this post should help you decipher some of that encrypted information.

Prefix is the first 3 alphanumeric characters of the part number string. This tells the user what the item was meant for use on originally. This applies to engines, platforms, differentials, gearboxes etc. Prefix examples.

A prefix of 01A tells us that a part was originally intended for use with the 01A gearbox.

078 indicates the part was for use with the Audi V6

058 indicates a 1.8T engine usually
034 indicates a in line 5 engine
8D0 indicates intended use with a B5 A4
3B0 indicates intended use with a B5 passat

There are dozens of prefixes, each has its own meaning.

Next is the middle 3 numeric characters... This indicates what the item is used for on the car... and usually where its found in ETKA.

The catalogue is divided into 10 groups.

Group 1 is engine
Group 2 is fuel/exhaust systems
Group 3 is gearbox
Group 4 is front suspension and drive
Group 5 is rear suspension and drive
Group 6 is wheels and brakes
Group 7 is shifter assembly
Group 8 is body
Group 9 is electrical
Group 0 is accessories

3b7-955-681 is a headlight washer pump

The first digit of the second section tells what main group the item should be classified under. The 2nd and 3rd digits detail the sub-group where the item is found. 9-55 in ETKA is the wiper system which includes the jets pumps and nozzles.

8D0-805-110-L-3FZ is the lower front b5A4 spoiler

110 is the item number however if it were an item that has a Left and Right version there would be two similar part numbers for example.. 8n0-615-125-A and 8n0-615-126-A. The odd number is meant to be the lower of the two and is also the LEFT side... where as the RIGHT side is the higher and even number.

8d0 tells its for the B5A4
805 indicates its in the body section and located in the bumpers sub-group.
The 110 is the actual item number
The "L" is the version or revision of the given part.
The "3FZ" is the color code

There can be multiple revisions of a given part number that are only differentiated by a single character. A 8d0-955-408-A wiper arm is not the same as an 8d0-955-408 wiper arm. The two might be completely incompatible even tho the part number is similar. Avoid making assumptions about cross compatibility just because part numbers look similar. If the number is different, something about the part is different.

Color codes are usually the last section of a given part number... they can be a miserable pain. Numbers like 5pk, 3fz, 01c and several others... all mean black, but different shades of black or different textures.

GRU means primered for painting
7DL means its grey

For things like C5A6 seat covers... there can be upwards of 15 pages of part numbers in etka. Each and every different part number indicates a different item. The A6 seat covers are one of the most annoying items to research since there are so many colors and different versions of each color...

This numbering system is the same for Audi, VW, Seat and Skoda. Porsche uses a similar system with periods instead of dashes... Porsche also has different categories 3 in Porsche is brakes where as it would be 6 for VAG. However Porsche uses the same XXX.XXX.XXX basic structure that Audi does, most likely because it came from Dr.Porsche if I remember correctly.
