Default Do not use Aviation Fuel in you Audi !

My friend had his A4 1.8TQ engine modified (alot), and he is now using a mixture of premium unleaded fuel and aviation fuel to run his Audi... and it purrs just like a kitten, better than kitten! He has been using the mix for over a year now with absolutely no probs, however put the mix into a 1.8l Audi 80 and it almost killed it! It was idling at just over 3000 revs.

I am curious as to what he had done, but he won't tell me nor let me have a good look under the hood. It still idles at around 1100rpm and even revs and acts like a standard engine run on normal unleaded fuel, but put you foot down and the power is definately there!

I wonder whether it could fly? :-P

Any Ideas on what he may have done?

Default I bet his car would run exactly the same if he ran straight 104 octane unleaded.

But it sounds like he is not running any cats or any 02 sensors so he can run the aviation fuel. BTW the reason people run that fuel is because it only cost $2 a gallon. If you dont have cats and are willing to replace the 02 sensors alot, then why not just run some real fuel like C16 which happens to be the racers choice of the high octane fuels.

Default Re: I bet his car would run exactly the same if he ran straight 104 octane unleaded.

The aviation fuel he is using is RON 110!! The other problem that affects all Australian Audi drivers is that our maximum fuel RON in Australia is 91, and it's fairly scarce. Standard unleaded is around 86 and quite a few servo's are now selling "ecofuel" with 10% ethanol...which stuffs normal car engines and totally ****s High compression engines like Audi's. The minimum recommended RON is 91 in Audi's!

I'm not sure whether america/USA has this yet and whether there are laws there that require servo's to list whether the fuel has ethanol and how much!

It has just become a requirement in Australia, after many people got the ****s about "Low Sulpher Diesel" and "ethanol Fuel" stuffing engines. My old schoolbus company recently received compensation after the Low sulpher fuel which was used on all buses in the 2000 Olympic games stuffed the engines of 8 mercedes buses in his fleet! All 8 buses were in the olympic fleet and have been using Low sulpher Diesel and they all have high compression engines... so for god's sake don't use any unpure fuel in you Audi!!!

OTHERWISE you don't deserve to drive an Audi! :-/

Default We use 100 octane av gas in our race car, but av gas is leaded.

I use 93 octane in my car every time I fill it up. It's about $1.80 a gallon right now where I live. I remember a few years ago it only cost $0.98 a gallon. Prices just keep rising.

Default Our octane rating method is different. We use an average of the Reseach Octane Number (higher) and

the Motor Octane Number. The MON number is usually 8-10 points lower than the RON. MON measures the resistence of the fuel to ping or knocking under heavy load and the RON to anti-knock or ping resistence at light load (partial throttle) and resistence to run on when the ignition is switched off (dieseling).
When folk here (USA) talk about running 93 or 91 octane that is in the MON+RON/2 method (M+R/2). So a 89 MON+ 97RON would be listed here as a 93 octane.
So if he is running 104 RON that is likely closer to what we would refer to as 100 octane race fuel. Unleaded race fuels here can be found at 104 R+M/2 method and I've seen leaded at ~114 R+M/2.

Default I think he meant R+M/2 when he said he is runnign 91 in his car

since that would be too low of a rating for RON and so would the 86 RON. The problem is that pump fuels are rated at R+M/2 and some race fuels only use a RON or research rating.

Default Low leaded but the burn rate is much different then pump and race fuels.

Default True SOME race fuels don't use R+M/2 but some do and those are the ones to which I referred in my

post. Here is a quote from his post (this is what prompted my reply) "The other problem that affects all Australian Audi drivers is that our maximum fuel RON in Australia is 91"
If that is the case they'd be running ~87 octane in the R+M/2 method. They likely have different emissions laws than do we and it is possible the OZ spec 1.8t is a tad less compression.

Default In Europe I noticed that they have 100 Oct gas at all pumps. Do they use the same ratings as us?
