I can't search the archives because there is a software block on the PC I'm currently on. But I remember seeing this posted earlier. What's the deal with the valve chatter? Normal and nothing to fuss about? I noticed it for the first time this morning only because I actually started the car without closing my door.

Hello Larry,
This has be discussed quite a bit on this forum (no flame intended). But to recap, this is another weird, common problem with Audis (like the high oil consumption problem). Some cars have this problem and some don't. It is the variation that is most disturbing which makes one wonder about Audi's manufacturing. Also to my knowledge Audi is unaware of any breakin or usage profile that is connected with this problem. Audi has had this issue with their oil non-return valves since the early to mid 80's. I have replaced mine many times of my 4KQ and I know owners to have replaced then on their A4 1.8 and 2.8's. Unfortunately, the problem is solved temporarily. Because of what I know (from my Audi mechanic friend and the Audi insider) and that it lasts less than 10 secs, I will leave well enough alone. I have brought my A4 to 2 dealers and they say this is "within-spec". These are the kind of issues that Audi must resolve to become a premiere brand. Also, I'd like to add that all Audi engines are very sensitive to oil level. Some owners have found peace with keeping their oil level right at the MAX mark. the diagnosis, as well as using your noggin. Then you are getting lifter drainback. This was an annoying problem with the old 4-5k audis, and an insignificant problem with the A4. Keep an ear out for this when you get to 45k and then take it in under warranty. It won't hurt anything and will get the most out of the new ones. And, you can get them to put a new timing belt put in for cost.

...I've owned with hydraulic lifters does the same thing. If it starts to do it for more than a few seconds, then it's not normal, but a couple seconds is fine. I respect Bob for bringing certain things to our attention, but the lifter noise is perfectly normal. My Mitsu had it, my 90Q had it, my boss' A6 and A4 have it, and my Nissan Xterra has it. Also, many other cars I've driven experience the same thing. Don't worry! :-)

I appreciate it. I do like to add though, that the valve tapping issue goes beyond the normal valve tapping that occurs when any car sits around too long. Audi has redesigned their valve at least twice that I am aware of. For example, for us 12v owners these valves should be at least PN 078-103-363P. Tapping is loud and lasts 15 sec when cold. Passengers usually comment about it, and in my experience I have never encountered this before (I'm a relative old timer ;-) Regards and Thanks, Bob 96 A4QM 86 4KCCQM |

...I've only experienced it for a few seconds. My 90Q was very sensitive to oil type, and my best results were with Mobil 1 15W-50, and Mobil 1 in general. Anyway, I agree that 15 seconds is too much, and I hope that you and anyone else get it resolved.
As far as consumption, the A4 and the 90Q use about a quart every 2K when I drive them, and about 1/2 quart every 3K when someone else drives them. The Xterra doesn't use any noticeable amount, but it sounds like it's craving it above 4K RPM. Ah, the joys of car ownership! :-) Charles |

When they take everything apart to put the lifters in, they can swap the new belt in for just about the cost of the belt.
