Here is what I was always told (many people at the track, including muscle car ol'schooler, Supra-boys, etc...). Nothing scientic but rather more word of wisdoms from other drag racers...
- Never exceed 30% of total mix... - Add 1oz. of automatic tranny fluid for each gallon of Toluene you add... Toluene/Xylene is suppose to be too dry and this additional oil helps. Cold start is somewhat rough after but everytime the car did start (just a couple more cranks/turn...).

I hadnt told they guy I was running Toluene/xylene mix, but he picked up on it, and saw adverse wear.
other then that I have had great results with it. I run 50/50 mix of toluene xylene with a splash of marvel mystery oil for color... mix that 2/1 gas/brew or i will by race gas and throw in some tolene to spike it...

I personally think that Toluene in fact is better for the engine in the sense that
a) you are running colder b) you don't ping I have heard about Toluene being bad for oil lines and being corrosive to some plastic but never to a motor... I'm very curious in learning about your experience.
