Default timing issue

i recently tried to do my timing belt and think i screwed up. somehow i think my timing is off because now it wont start. at first i didnt use the cam locking tool because the cams seemed like it wasnt gonna move. but i realized it did. i have seen videos saying point big holes inward for TDC which i use the tool for and the mark on the harmonic balancer and engine cove and still get nothing. it trys to start then it just stops and then doesnt try to start unlesss i take the timing belt off and try all over again. do you think you can help me with this? i have a 2001 a6 quattro 4.2l

Use the tools (bar and pin) to set timing correctly, then do a leak down test to see if you bent valves by trying to cheat.
