.avi files not working from SD, video works, audio is not
I have been loading DVDrip .avi files onto SD cards and they do play audio, however you only get background sound and the dialog doesn't come through. Really weird.
Any ideas? Or settings I can change?
here is the video format

Here are the supported formats for the MMI:
The updated 2013 Nav+ system can play media files (MP3, AAC, WMA (V7-9), MPEG-1 and 2, DiVX, Xvid, H.264/MP4, and WMV9) up to 720x576px, up to 25FPS, with bit rates up to 2000kbit/sec.
AVI is not supported by the MMI as a container. I'm guessing the xVid codec can work if it's in a supported container, i.e. MP4. Also, it's possible the AC3 audio format is not translating the main channels.

I'm saying AVI is not supported by any version of MMI. You need to encode your video files in a different container, i.e. MPEG-4. There are various PC and Mac apps available that can convert from AVI to MP4 on your computer so you can create MMI compatible files for a DVD or SD card. What was the original source of the video?

AVI is supported by the MMI. It is listed in the manual. I have tested it in my car with an AVI file with AC3 5.1 audio and Xvid video and it works. However, since I have the base audio system (not Bose, and not B&O), it downmixes to stereo, but I can still hear everything.
Which audio system do you have? It sounds like the AC3 5.1 is being decoded, but you are missing the center channel (which contains the dialog in most movies).

Try a channel test file such as: http://www.tfm.ro/win32-projects/test-avi-ac3/
If it doesn't work, then you may have to go to the dealer. I have seen on other threads on this forum that there is an MMI version 715 update that makes the Bose system "sound better". Perhaps it sounds better because it fixes a problem where the center speaker was not operating (wild guess). However, with stereo music, it certainly sounds different to use a center speaker, but it's not really a problem to be missing the center channel, unlike with movies.
