Default Compatibility of a Used Comfort Control Module (CCM)

I've been told by the mechanic that my CCM on my 2002 A4 needs to be replaced. He told me that the part is $750 new from Audi, and I can't use a used part for the reason in this email he sent me:
We have to get new control module from Audi and re program it to match to your car network,no we cannot use any used part because it will not be compatible with your car it is design to fit one car only.We will order it and it will take few days because the order is for your car vin specific. Thanks.
This sounds fishy to me. Is it true that this part must be made to order for your specific car? Has anyone been able to replace this in the past with a used part?

Many thanks.

They are $750 because that's just how much they cost new. Has nothing to do with the uniqueness of the CCM for your car. Having said that, you do have to be careful and get one that works with your VIN and I am pretty sure the 02 had a unique one. I don't agree that a used one will not work if you find the right part number and one that functions. You might try searching for one online, but buyer beware with electronic parts online!!!!

I actually had my CCM replaced not too long ago. I have an 02 as well and I initially had my mechanic send it out to a company to see if it could be repaired (his idea). It was a no go so I had to buy a new one. I would recommend you just buy a new one. Why risk the used one not working properly? Then you'd be out even more money..

Out of curiosity, what were your symptoms of a bad CCM?

I'm surprised about the $750 quote. My 04 CCM was $450 from the dealer. If you can find one used with the same part #, it should work fine after programming it.
