Default AUDI OEM ipod adapter install..>>

Saturday morning project:

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts1sh.jpg">
Audi ipod adapter Part No.: 8E0-051-444

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts2ae.jpg">
extra cables hmm...

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts2gk.jpg">
WRONG cable for Concert II (that would have been too easy!)

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts2mg.jpg">
CORRECT cable for Concert II... nope, no socket there

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts2s9.jpg">
ipod cable

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts2uo.jpg">
wire ties (how nice of them) and the adapter

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts2zl.jpg">
note: my $5 radio removal tools from 42draftdesign didn't quite do the trick
autopsy later showed that even when fully inserted they're not long enough to 'click' in the latch. They depressed fully but I couldn't use them to pull out the radio.... a couple of flat blades did the trick!

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts31u.jpg">
this bigger socket is what we need... bye bye CD changer!

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts37o.jpg">
good to note how things used to be before taking apart (you never know!)

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts3dz.jpg">
to get all the wires out you have to unlock (push out) the purple-ish tab on the side of the socket (not really clear from 'ikea-like' instructions)

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts4qq.jpg">
pulling out didn't work in my case but a forceful push with a scredriver did the trick.. one at a time!

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts4t5.jpg">
i decided to put the ipod in the center console... with the car out of warranty and all the horror stories here about broken latches ($$$) I thought not to tempt fate and stay away from the glovebox
pulled out the switches and drilled an opening for the cable in the back

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts4zb.jpg">
snaked the cable through

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts55g.jpg">
and

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts5eh.jpg">
voila!
even though you really can't see the hole I didn't like it 'gaping' so
I cut a small hole in a rubber plug (just big enough for the cable) and now it looks more 'finished' with no gaps or openings.. also keeps the cable nice and tight

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts5k1.jpg">
connected the adapter

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts94m.jpg">
sheesh.. now the hard part!
put THOSE wires... in THAT socket

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts8x1.jpg">
Before..

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts9ao.jpg">
and AFTER

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts9d4.jpg">
with some close-ups for future reference

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts9ib.jpg">

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts9l0.jpg">
remember to push the red locking tab back in!

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jts9qg.jpg">
without too much force and without pulling the wires out!

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jtsb3d.jpg">
tuck in the adapter neatly out of sight

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jtsb4z.jpg">
SAFE... ok my code was... SAFE
ok let's see... CDC...omg... it works!

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jtsb9d.jpg">
gratuitous AUDI logo on ipod

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jtsbba.jpg">
and you can do random!

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jtsbd2.jpg">
everything works as expected.. can access playlists FF/RW/SKIP

backlight times out as before and any press will bring backlight on but all controls are disabled

I really don't miss seeing the ID3 tag info
It does display on the ipod however

<img src="http://tinypic.com/jtsbhl.jpg">
... out of sight

worth the $ imo but a bit of a PITA to rewire the socket
amazing sound quality (over FM-transmitters) and very convenient OEM integration with (somewhat) lower cost than icelink

Cheers!<ul><li><a href="http://www.clairparts.com/accessories4.asp?product_id=2471&amp;PDID=201062"> ipod oem adapter</a></li></ul>

Nice write up, so to install it takes the place of the CD changer?

Does this work with the older head units with tape deck?

Default Can you tell me>>>

This and the Denison can work with 5 playlists. If you have more than 5 playlists on your iPod how does it select which 5 to access?
