Except that procedure is for a Manual 6 speed, not a tiptronic as stated in the post.

Default Besides baskinblack4.2L's car (a few posts below), I don't know of any 2000 4.2 (A6 or A8)...

without a tip tranny.

Default Manuals are available for that year....

manuals were available outside the US for the 4.2 A6 A8 and S8. So with the limited information available I was making the best suggested fix for the described problem...NOT automatically assuming that since it was a 2000 that it HAD to be a tip

Default If it is an automatic (there is only a few 4.2 with manual in the US), here is your problem.

The reverse clutch seal is ripped.(left on the pic.) You will need a rebuild. $2500-$4000 in the US.

Default Didn't "automatically assume", just looked for clues...

" 2000 4.2 85k miles" - the use of "miles" indicates probable US origin. Could be UK (or perhaps old school Canadian), but "rebuild of the trani and I can expect to pay 8 to 10k" sounds like North American slang, and North American prices for a trani rebuild. Which in itself, is a term generally used with automatics.

Koz.

BTW, I'm just having fun with ya. Feeling like a good argument tonight.
