Default Buying Q5 - 2.0T or 3.0T?

Hi.

Hopefully you folks can help me make a buying decision...

After two A4s (2002 and 2011), it's time for a change - a nice Q5. The right combo for me is the Premium Plus with all the options including the sport seats, but not the Audi S line plus package and 20" wheels. But there are two issues:

- 2.0 TFSI or 3.0 TFSI?
- Color?

With the 3.0, I loved the off the line performance but I felt like there was something missing compared to the 2.0 that I drove previously. When I drove a 2.0 again today I noticed the same thing - a certain "lightness" in the way it handled. A bit more "fun" to drive than the 3.0 (both with 19" wheels). Obviously it's slower, but nevertheless the 2.0 seemed a bit more sporty and more willing to be flung about than the 3.0. I can't explain it any better than that.

Has anyone else noticed this? Or have I lost the few remaining marbles that I have left?

Regarding color, with the 2.0 engine and sport seats, my sales rep indicates that the only exterior color available is "Lava Gray". The Audi site doesn't show this limitation.

Can anyone else confirm the 2.0 sport seat/exterior color combos?

Thanks,

When you order sport seats, your interior colors are limited to black or brown. Exterior colors are mostly the same for all Q5 engines and lines.

Hi Dan,

Being limited to only Lava Grey certainly does not sound right. There are some limitations when it comes to interior colour combo's and packages but not on the exterior colour. Definitely query that with your dealer and perhaps get a second opinion from another dealer if they stand by this.

Not that Lava Grey is a bad colour (I have it on my Q5 and would likely order it again on my next Q5 too!)

I decided on the 2.0T after driving both. I understand what you are describing and there is a small weight difference with the motor. The 2.0T dies not feel as strong but seems to have a more nimble on road feel. I also have the 19 inch wheels which make the ride more firm.

The latest version of the 2.0T is great and with the 8 speed tranny is a great powertrain. I find it is better than adequate most of the time. You will win more drag races with the 3.0 T, but the motor is a bit thirstier with fuel.

Regarding colors, I wanted a tan interior so sport seats were not an option. The bigger side bolsters would be nice, but this is not a sport sedan like an A4.

The 2.0 is more than adequate; and very torquey. Not as quiet IMO.

Im very happy with the 2.0 T, and feel the 3.0 would just be over kill.

I agree with your assessment.

It all depends on ones driving style and expectations.

Default Coming from an A4 3.0...

I drove both the Q5 2.0 and 3.0 extensively and the 2.0 won for what you state the better handling. I prefer handling over the minimal increase in power from the 3.0 that I would eperience in normal driving. The 2014, 2.0T has a slight edge over the previous 2.0T's in that I don't experience any turbo lag or hesitations at all, plus the 9 hp bump in power and other tweaks, I find the engine very smooth and quiet in the cabin as compared to my previous A4 3.0 I find the engine performance about the same if not a little more fun off the line. I really don't have any complaints at all with the 2.0T and couldn't see spending another $7K on the 3.0 that could go towards the next generation Q5 in 2015-16. I only drive in sport mode and get about 22-25 mpg with 50% city/50% highway driving.

No complaints at all....

The only thing I don't like about the 2.0T is harshness below 2000 rpm. I can feel engine vibration thru the steering wheel. I have been keeping my Q5 in Sport mode most of the time to keep the engine above 2000 rpm.

This trait is a disappointment in particular because I never noticed any engine harshness on my 2006 A3 with 2.0T. My A3 had the DSG transmission, which may have something to do with it, but I think it is more likely due to the higher load on the engine with the Q5. It could also be due in part to the steering... hydraulic assist vs electric.

Yes, and it is fantastic overkill. I moved up from a 2.0T to the 3.0T when they came out. I agree it appears to be less nimble, but there is nothing wrong with the agility of the 3.0T.

If you can swing it, treat yourself and get the 3.0T.
