Default audi chorus (2) radio - fails after entering SAFE code

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/76462/dscf0040.jpg"></center><p>
Got myself a wide faced Audi Chorus 2 radio and after entering the code from the SAFE screen (which is correct) starts but then shuts down immediately and the radio then goes into safe mode again. I briefly see the radio settings on the display and then it goes dead. Almost as though a fuse is blowing... but it's not.

Any ideas? I have to say I'm only bench testing the radio with a power supply. So I'm only using the ground and 12v+ve connections. Has it got something to do with the Can-bus? Does the radio only work when the other connections are present?

Thanks,

Stuart

Default Have you got both perm live & switched live connected?

If there is no switched live on the diagram on the unit then it will need the CAN-BUS to tell it when the ignition is on, which is why it keeps turning itself off.

Default There's no switched live...

.. and I haven't got an Audi with CAN-BUS so I guess I'm stuffed. Again!

I bought the Chorus 2 for my Audi 100 cos the older type of Audi radios are difficult to kit out with a CD changer (which I need to activate the line-ins for my iPod).

What is on the CAN-BUS (K-BUS) line? Can I ground it or put 12v on it?

You need a Concert I, as these definately have a traditional ignition on connection.
Alternatively you could have a look inside the HU and see if there is a pin for ignition on that has just been blanked off. I doubt they would have redesigned the circuit board for CAN-BUS only use, so you may find you can simply reconnect the pin. It is normally the third pin along from ground and called "S-Kont"(see diagram).

Default Radio collection is expanding

Well, that would add to my collection as I now have Audi Gamma CC, Audi Gamma CC (Bose version), Audi Chorus 1 en Chorus 2! Still no inputs for my iPod.

I looked at getting a Concert 1 before I bought the Chorus 2 but I got the impressin that connecting an after market changer or RCA input adapter was more problematic with the Concert 1's.
Same problem as my older Audi Bose and the Older wide faced Audi Delta's in that they need Audi specific changers.

Default Get a Concert I...and attache a blitzsafe via the CD changer interface. Good luck!

Concert I isn't CAN-based...so you won't have any issues. If the Chorus II is CAN-based (which I think it is)...then you won't be able to provide a CAN protocol from your Audi 100. Sorry. Specifically, the CAN-bus is supplying the ignition, illumination and speed sensor (GALA) information via this protocol (commonly found in 2002+ A4/A6/TT/A8 etc etc..

Let me know if you need the part#'s for the female 8,10 and 20 pin adaptors and pins/wires to make it fit correctly.

Glad to help!

Default Ah yes, but you see I don't have the cable or interface..

..cos my C4 Audi 100 wasn't prewired.

I just have an increasingly large collection of OEM Audi radios all of which I'm tinkering with to try and activate the line-ins for my iPod. I don't have any intention of running a cable up to the back for a changer as I have 20GB of MP3's.

Ideally I would like to get the OEM 1992 Audi Bose into thinking that the there's a CD connected without buying the 100/V8 interface box.

Thanks for the info though. I guess I made a mistake buying a C-BUS radio for my non C-BUS radio. So it will be up for sale.

Even CANBUS HU's will work without a CANBUS connection, however they will shut down after 60minutes. e.g. when used in a CANBUS vehicle you can turn the HU on manually with no keys in the ignition and therefore no CANBUS and it'll work for an hour. After an hour you just have to turn it on again this is so you don't drain the battery if you've left it on and wandered off and forgotten about it.
