I checked my oil today and decided to add a quart because it burns a little every few thousand miles. When I took off the oil cap this is what I found, see pic below. Also the inside of the tube where you fill with oil had a lot of this whitish milky colored goo around it. Car runs fine and the dealer just changed my oil 1000 miles ago and didn't indicate any problem. Anyone seen this before?

That's water vapor residue. Fairly normal in cold weather, when you make short trips. You want to let the car warm up a bit more, to allow the oil to burn off the water which naturally occurs.

Looks like Mr. Hanson was correct, my local dealer stated this:

That is normal--the whitish milky goo is a mix of the water vapor and engine oil. Water vapor from the positive crank case ventilation is formed from the temperature change in the engine against the outside ambient air temperature. With the extreme cold we have been having, it is now more pronounced.

Appreciate the responses as I was a little freaked out !!!

Very common- my '71 914 does that in colder weather, done it since 1971... nothing to stress about.

Coolant will make ALL of the oil look like that though, not just the little bit on the cap. If you pull the dipstick out and it looks like chocolate milk, you have a problem. If not, you're fine. =)
