Default iPod integration with MMI

At the S6 / S8 event in Montreal we got to play with a VERY cool feature that will be available in the 2007 A6/S6, A8/S8 and Q7 with build dates after November 2006 - a fully integrated iPod connection.

Inside the glovebox next to the CD changer is plug that connects to current generation iPods. Plug in your iPod and you get, when the CD menu is accessed via MMI, full access to your iPod menus. You can surf through playlists, artists, etc. and you will see it all on the MMI display. Additionally the driver's information display on the dashboard displays the track name.

This system will include an interchangable cable for iPod connectivity or a 3.5mm jack so that basically any music player can be hooked up to the system (albeit without menu functionality). A USB 2.0 connection will also be offered by mid-2007 for connectivity to various USB devices.

One the nicest things about this system is that it will can be retrofitted into existing cars. We didn't hear for certain whether that means all cars with the current generation MMI system or simply A6/S6's, A8/S8's and Q7's that were built without it. We'll try to get an answer to that tonight.

In the S8 we drove today the system worked flawlessly. Granted the low sample rate MP3's aren't the perfect match to the $6300 B&O stereo system, but the convenience factor of being able to quickly connect the iPod and go through its menus was tremendous. We expect many people will be looking for the retrofit as soon as available... it should cost about $300 at a certified dealer.

Default So those of us with 05-06 models with MMI are screwed?

Nice. I've been waiting on this to come to market, and apparently it won't be compatible anyway.

Default A4/S4/RS4 Owners left in the cold?

I don't have any experience with the MMI system in the A6/A8 cars, is it very different than the system in the NAV equipped A4s? Don't they all use the RNS-E system?
