Default NEWBIE NEEDS HELP!

Hey all,

Im new to the forum.

I have brought an Audi A4 B5 1998 wagon (1.8L)

I brought it with some problems, however there is one I can't work out.
There is a slight shudder/misfire at idle. The mechanic I took the vehicle to has checked the injectors, the coil pack, leads and plugs were changed.

I am yet to check the MAF and underneath the rocker cover for sludge build up.

Today I noticed a bit of a tappet noise as well.

More information regarding the shudder/misfire:
Only present at idle
When accelerating it disappears
There is a slight bit of lag when under heavy acceleration
Stalls on cold start
Small amount of engine movement at idle

The car has 180000kms on it and I have added a valve lifter additive to try and free what I think may be a stuck hydraulic tappet.

The mechanic said there was a slight decrease in pressure in cylinder 3 at start up also.

I am yet to do an oil and filter change because I would like feedback beforehand.

Thanks,

I look forward to the response of the forum

Congrats on the buy.

You have no tappets. Do not add any more snake oil. How old are the spark plugs? Right plugs? What codes are you seeing, if any?

I have hydraulic lifters?

The plugs were replaced by the mechanic when the coil pack was replaced.

I haven't got a scanner because i don't plan on keeping the car. it is for resale but i want to have it in good order before doing so.

Any further ideas?

Without codes, you basically have nothing and all you can do it guess. :-(

Most parts stores will pull the codes for you free of charge. It won't be VAG but at least you should be able to get the codes. Start with that.

You can buy a generic hand held OBDII code reader that will work with most US 1996 and newer vehicles for under $60, false economy to try to fix it without.

E-bay has them even cheaper.

Or if you post your location and/or look around, you may find someone who has a vag-com and will help you out for beer or a pat on the back.
