Default Normal to have chunks falling off my Pilots...?

I have about 26K of relaxed driving on these tires, they've been rotated every 5-7K mikes and i check the pressure regularly. It's happening to both front tires by far the worse, but it's also starting to happen on the rear.

I would guess the tires are underinflated - what pressures are you running? on what car and what pressures does the MANUAL say?

I have the same issue with my PSSs, and someone else I know who tracks with PSSs does too.

I'm really surprised to see this type of wear and tear. This has only happened on one tire (front driver's side). The rest are ok.

I have another DE event coming up. As I said, the other tires have normal wear to them and plenty of tread left. Think I can get away with just replacing the one tire and not have to buy a set of 4?

Default Not normal; and I ran these on my A8L W12

Thus, even heavier model than yours. Have run Sport A/S's for about 20K miles in past few years, My summer PS2's wore through their whole life pretty evenly and finally got replaced at 2/32's on some last fall pre-rain; opted to put the A/S's back on that I had run the prior winter. Now running full time.

You could get it aligned--wear looks fundamentally like a toe issue, but...

From having seen wear like this on my A6 4.2, I would say look for suspension issues. On many Audi's, and the D3 (A8) specifically, likely the front upper control arms. If the inner bushings on those control arms are worn, the alignment will not just be off, but move around. Also check tie rod ends. The combo of those two was leading to some chewed up tires on my A6, very similar to the wear seen on yours. Your rears may be showing some signs from when they were on the front and got stressed.

Since replacing the parts and getting aligned, all seems well again on the A6. And again on my A8 w/ identical tires, no such problem at all; I have had the front control arms on that car replaced under warranty.

It looks like severe to wear but if it was toe, it would be either on the inside or outside wear. You could have either front and rear have toe in and toe out so over a period of time and rotations, you get both inside and outside wear. I would suspect you have some loose suspension components, ie control arms worn out.

In the 25 years of being in the tire business, that is one of the weirdest tire wear I've seen.
