What does the esp button do?
I know its for traction but isnt that what quattro does basically (awd). If i turn off esp how different does the car handle near the limit. What are the differences (car spin out, etc...) thanks

Near the limit...
ESP will kick in and apply brake/trottle adustments to keep you out of trouble. It will also kick in during really hard launches if it detects wheel spin during a drag race. Just remember that it's always on.....you need to hit the button everytime you start the car if you don't want it kicking in.

quattro transfers power front to back or back to front....
the presence of ESP, aside from braking and throttle, also transfers power from side to side in the event that is required.

Turn it off if you want to drive as if you were on a track :-)
It's really annoying when it kicks in on sharp turns that you want to take aggressively. It seems to briefly kill the throttle and with it your ability to power out.

Actually, ESP isn't for transferring power from side-to-side...
...the EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution) system takes care of that via the ABS sensors and your brakes.

I stand corrected then.....
I don't even have ESP. Can't think of many occasions when I ever needed it. I think the quattro in itself is fantastic. My guess is that Audi had no choice but to throw in some sort of traction control for marketing purposes, knowing full well that the cars were already safe enough.
