No, that's not normal. The non-turbo 5000's aren't exactly quick off the line, but the short gearing and wide torque band make them really quite quick on the highway. In mine, I hit 80 without...

What's wrong with my poor 88 5000s?

Car:
1988 Audi 5000s
5 Speed
FWD
estimated 250k miles

tl;dr: Please read the whole thing because I'm really sad that my Audi isn't running properly :(

About a week ago, the car started...

No, it is not worth that much. However, that is pretty much the holy grail of these cars. Quattro, Turbo, 200, Avant, and it's even black! Use the mileage to haggle the price down. Even if you end up...

It drove me crazy running without the centre caps, but like I mentioned, they're just crazy fragile; probably why they cost so much. The 100's had these great 15" wheels with the four lug pattern...

Yes, they may look a lot better on a 90, didn't think of that. And they are easy to clean, especially with the centre caps. I found a source for centre caps online for mine, but they were about $30 a...

Without pics, I can't say for certain, but you are probably talking about the base 14" wheels that came on the non-Quattro models like my 88 5000s. The centre caps are ridiculously fragile, probably...

Oh, whoops. Autos have fewer ratios than the manuals though, so the top gear ratio is probably very similar, if not even shorter on the autos.

3500 at 70mph rpm sounds right to me, that's pretty much exactly where my 88 5000 is. I'm assuming yours is a manual. These cars have very short gearing, which is awesome in my book.

The V8 is a cooler car, the A8 is a better car. Not sure about parts compatibility, but V8's require a lot of maintenance.

How could an engine be "less" interference? Engines are either interference, or non interference.... Either the pistons and valves occupy the same space at the top of the combustion chamber, or they...

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but is the 2.3l engine in my 88 5000s (non-turbo) interference or not? Aren't the turbo and non turbo engines the same?

That's what I did with my Miata, and it sounds fine. As someone mentioned though, the car will never pass a visual inspection. Not a worry if you don't have emissions where you live.

Just an FYI, gutting the cat usually gives the exhaust an unpleasant, tinny sound. If you can ram a straight pipe through, it will sound much nicer.

Harbor Freight sells a rotary buffer for about $30. I know a lot of people can do great things with DA's and Meguiars new MF system, but anything outside of that and you'll not be able to correct as...

M105 and M205 will be your best friend on that paint. Try Meguiars burgundy pads with the 105 followed by yellow with the 205. Nice find, those engines are indeed bulletproof. Mine has 225,000 on it...

I don't think that would work. Only one of the holes would be correct, so I'd have to drill three other holes, and then would end up with a rotor with eight holes in it. Chances are at least one of...
