it does need to be removed.
there's no specific labor operation code for this engine, we get paid 27.9 hrs every time we need to remove one of these engines.
so far we have never remove one where...

possible the sensor has failed or lost connection.

could be anything, but by history of failures the fuel pump is the first in my list followed by the crank sensor.
easy to check the pump, for the sensor you need a scanner to see if reads engine rpm.

is the cosmoline sprayed under the car, you can see it in a few spots.
over time it melts and looks like a fluid leak.
leave alone is there to prevent rust.

sounds like the thermostat is sticking open.
when this happens you drive at high speed and the air flow thru the radiator cools down the coolant
if you drive at slow speed is ok as the flow of air...

all you are doing is altering the original design removing the biggest safety feature out of it.

ABS

only two wires because there's no pad wear sensor
under the rear seat are two connectors for abs sensors

when the controller fails it defaults to rear sensor failure fault
can you post the VIN ...
