You don't know how big a risk you're taking unless you do a visual inspection, which is kind of a PITA. And also listen to the idlers. I chose to do my own belt, and to do it on schedule.

'97 A8Q Small mystery hose from behind D/S timing cover etc

There is a loose mystery hose coming from behind the timing set on the driver's side. It's one of the puny ones (what is that, 3mm ID?) and it has a braided cover. It seems to stick out about a foot...

Subject pretty much says it all. If I set both sides to lo then I get hot air out of everywhere but the center, where I get cool air and eventually little bits of water. Never sounds like running...
