Well it could be the CV joint. The reason I didn't think mine was the CV joint was because usually it's not a metal clanking noise, more of a clicking noise.

It's not tied to the airbag but it's a little piece that clips onto the main steering area, and then from there it has a little plug to plug in the airbag..
