They also replaced the VB, with results, didn't they? TC + VB should be enough.

What the article added to our knowledge was some European shops' experiences & confirmation of which parts wear.

It was also pleasing to see the shop get right down to measuring whether the...

Thanks for saying "module" again. I think they replaced the lamp control module...

There is no "brake control module" on the current path to the brake lights. There is a "lamp control module" which detects burned out bulbs. From there the wiring goes separately to the left, center,...

Paul, look at the wiring diagram. I did and reached the same conclusion as the dealer

Not to say it couldn't be a ground but even when I stretch I can't understand how. When the highbeams are off, only the foglight module and instrument cluster are connected to the + side of them, or...

Sorry, nothing obvious jumps out

It looks (on the 2001 US model S8 wiring diagram anyway) that the wire from the light switch goes to the left & right high beam fuses, the foglight module (to turn off the fog lights), and the...

Expect real sluggishness if the ECM thinks the brakes are on

So yes, the brake light problem and sluggishness can go together. (Some cars get confused if all the brake lights are burned out because the burned out bulbs no longer pull the signal at the ECM...

Though the Toyota electric CVT is pretty clever, and seems to hold up

Yes, there's something simple and honest about traditional manual gearboxes, but you also like clever engineering, so check this out if you haven't.

The core of the transmission is an open...

Part of the crankcase ventilation system

At least one forum member has had the valve itself crack.

Yes the sensor could still be bad. If its wiring looks good, consider changing it

They don't go bad too often, but on another car model where they did, they'd be temperature sensitive and work well except for the times when the car didn't run.

Yes, on contacts during reassembly. But bad soldering from the supplier was the problem.

On mine it was bad soldering in both lights

There's more to it than that on a 5V. The internal oil and coolant seals should also be replaced

... lest it start letting oil into the coolant. BrianC72gt and I have both written here about that job.

You have a different gearbox and slightly different symptoms than most here who have lost reverse.

The 4.2 uses the 5HP24A, but smaller engines do not as far as I know. And the 5HP24A does not go into limp-home mode with all the gear positions lit at once when its clutch F seal fails. Most or all...

"Fix" beats "clear & recheck" for faults which disable the car if they worsen (e.g. rpm sensor)

I think your suggestion was too general. Sometimes clearing & rechecking is fine, for example to see how quickly a code comes back so you can decide how urgently to replace an old oxygen sensor....

Excellent. That's with '01 ECM and instruments, right? Steering wheel shifting in D/S?

And a couple things you might try for determining if there really are dual-use A8/S8 TCMs: see if yours accepts A8 coding, and if it does, see if it upshifts at A8 redline.

Does reseating the plugs really do anything, or is it just disconnecting the power?

I wonder if those plugs are really subject to corrosion, or if it's just that the instrument cluster needs to be reset sometimes.

On my car, the instrument cluster refused to light up once, a few...

They must have updated the Bentley manual; mine showed no A8/S8 coding difference

Hopefully that's all it is. It could also be that there is a different TCM part number needed to accept the S8 coding. If it's the same part, then a miscoded TCM could overrev an A8 during manual...

S8s have higher redline and looser torque converters than A8s, right?

If so, your car should really have an S8 TCM. But you might temporarily try an A8 TCM just to see if it talks with everything else.

... or any other cause of low refrigerant. A classic A8 symptom well described in the forum.

It would be interesting to hear if the problem turns out not to be low low refrigerant.
