Ref DMF to SMF conversion. My car is a 5 speed manual. Personally, I could barely see/feel the difference when going from DMF to SMF with regular driving. I tend to say i like it more with SMF....

i have the same car as you have (except mine is 1997). @65 mph you should read below 3000 rpm. you should have 3000 rpm at 69mph(approx 110 kmh).
personally, i doubt the clutch is at fault....

It can be anything. To avoid suprises with the sludge, I installed a pressure gauge. It is 20$ at autozone or advanced auto parts.

It is cheaper, more reliable and no need to spend money on try...

Do not rush to blame the release bearing. Although it can be that one as well, I would try something easier first.
