I skipped the allroad for the BMW wagon because it's quicker, has sharper handling and a lower roof, which helps for dealing with my kayak.

Try packing the kids in one of the dealer's TTs and see how they react to a test drive. If they don't like it and carry on like rabid chimps, you could still get a TTS and an optional roof rack...
