I haven't looked at mine in detail yet, but I would check to see if it is easily removable by taking out a couple of screws so that it can be washed and then reinstalled.

I just did this before the weekend trip up to the mountains using a safety pin. It's thicker than a needle and worked for me. It takes patience to get them in the right spot, but it is doable.

Yes, I put part of it on a card to earn miles. As you said, the dealer had a max that they would allow me to put on the card. I can't remember what the max was though, not as much as I wanted.
