As far as I know if it is the immobiliser the car will start for 2 seconds and then shut off and there is a symbol on the dash (a key I think) that will flash.

When I had a hard/no start problem...

I am going to assume it's a 01V and not a CVT since it is a Quattro. The "clunking" could be a hard shift which might be fixed by replacing the 2 solenoids responsible for the 2-1 downshift pressure...

The 3 letter codes for your options are on a sticker in the original owners manual or on a sticker in the spare...
