Two problems: stalling | juddering when braking

One old '97 A8, two problems, both probably simple to diagnose if you know more than me (not hard!):

1. When stopped or coming to a very gradual stop, the revs suddenly drop very low before coming...

The dealer seemed pretty sure that the gauge was one of the reasons

that the fuel pump burned out - ie, it was being overworked because the gauge was overreading. I can recall thinking that the gauge was high once in recent weeks but that may have been nothing.

Fuel gauge

So the fuel pump on my A8 went kablooey last week. The dealer has changed it at their usual enormous cost. They also say that the fuel gauge is faulty - it's saying that the tank is one-third full...

Re: do you see anything on the driver information display?

Nope, cluster is fine. Everything about the car is fine bar the fact that it won't bloody start! :(

Mechanic will take a look tomorrow. I'm fearing a fuel pump....

A8 v S-class: Sunday Times review

Two reviews here, so make sure you read the whole thing. Pity that most of the A8 review is about the poor command centre in the S-class.....

<a...

Follow-up: should the fuel relay click when engine is started?

I've been trying to count the clicks made in the relay box when I try to start the engine with the fuel relay in place and with it removed. As far as I can tell, there are the same number of clicks...

Paul had the answer in a much earlier post

The grey one is the fuel relay.

You guys rock...!

Seriously, this place is great. Despite having a European version (so right-hand drive), I got the passenger's side open, drained the unit, and gave the lines a good blow-through. No idea if that...

Air conditioning waterfall

My air conditioning unit is suddenly making loud waterfall sounds when it's turned up high. The sound comes from directly behind the vents in the top-centre of the dashboard. When the is 2/3 - full,...

Aerial snapped - eay to replace?

So my 1998 A8 was driven (not by me) through the car wash with the aerial up. The metal part snapped off at the base. Audi have quoted me £160 for a replacement.

Re: 3. Low on oil? I've heard similar ticking from 2 different A8 engines when oil level was low.

Thanks - shouldn't be low on oil as it's just been serviced but that's an easy one to check, so I'll take a look.

Climate control question

A question about climate control - I'm not sure if my A8 has a problem or whether this is just how the climate control works.

With both sides on LO: cool, sometimes cold air, appears from vents....

Various small issues

Just bought a lovely 98 A8. Very good condition but a few niggly bits. The dealer (not Audi) has been very good and fixed plenty and would be willing to take a look at these things but I wonder if...

Re: might be a bit harsh (the $ to £), but......

More documentation than I'd ever care to look through for the car. Every service and every visit to the dealer (and possibly every tank of gas put into the thing) is documented and invoiced. There is...

Yeah, I'd seen that page. Excellent and very helpful stuff there. I will get the car inspected by a professional if I go for one. The main prospect has been very well looked after and doesn't look...

Re: Plan on spending $1200/year maintenance

Would be getting the dealer or a local audi specialist to do the work. Not enough experience to do it myself (and probably not enough time!). What's most likely to crop up that will need attention at...

A8 - high mileage okay?

I'm looking to buy an A8, around 6-7 years old (about my price range). I've seen a few which have pretty high mileage - between 150K and 180K. They all have full Audi service histories and don't seem...
