At least you didn't have the new one fail shortly after install...in the wifes 2.8 avant the passengers side failed at 80K. The replacement from ECS failed in less than 8 weeks/<2k.

I'll 2nd the recommendation to NOT bother removing the fan.
Instead, I drilled a hole slightly larger than your typical WD-40 straw through the fan about 1/4" away...
