I've heard that too, but have no experience with it. Only additional comment I have is may want to disconnect the exhaust so you don't destroy the cat.

You will need to drop the oil pan and clean out the oil pump screen. And, you still may have the problem as the sludge will be throughout the engine.

I would get codes from a VCDS reader. Sounds similar to a failed Engine Speed Sensor (G28) which will only be identified by a VCDS reader versus generic reader.
