I have done 2 Auto manual Cabrio conversions and was even preparing one of the cars to be a 1.8T.
I had Euro bumpers, Euro headlights, and lots of other Euro parts.

Sadly, I ended up scrapping...

Connect the red/black wire to +12V DC (usually found at overhead console light). It uses the mounting screws for the ground. The cover operates the on/off "switch".

You have to replace the air box under the dash too in order to switch to manual controls.
All of the B4 Cabriolets came with manual HVAC as well as the B4 90 "Sport" models.

If you don't know when the Ignition switch was replaced, it wouldn't be a bad idea to swap a new one in.

You need to check the wire on the starter to see if it is getting 12V with the key...

Your car will "auto adjust" that piston out farther by pulling the e-brake handle a few times. That adjustment mechanism is the reason that you have to turn the piston while pressing it in.

You will be amazed at all the little things that go wonky with a bad ignition switch.
