Steering wheel groan

Steering wheel groan
This summer I've developed a load groaning noise when I turn the steering wheel. The dealership lubed it but the sound returned within a day. They now tell me that Audi says the original design was defective and that they need to replace the entire steering column with a newly designed one. Sounds like a radical solution to the problem especially on a car with only 5K miles. Has anyone else experienced this? I see posts on other forums but they are all for older A4/A6 models.
Thanks,
Chris

Glad you posted this. Same thing was happening to me a few weeks ago. It went away by itself after a day but I am concerned it will come back. So the dealership told you specifically that it was a defective design/product? Wtf

Yes, Audi of Shrewsbury told me that they were in touch with Audi engineers about this since they weren't able to diagnose the problem themselves. Apparently the magnets in the electromagnetic steering expand when the temperature gets warm and are rubbing or something. Hello Audi - have you heard of warm weather testing in the desert for new product development??? It's going on a month now and I'm still waiting for a new steering column to come from Germany. My noise comes and goes. Some days it's really loud and other days I barely hear it at all. I'm sure it is temperature-related because I bought my car in December and didn't start hearing this until June.

Yep that's how mine sounded. I hear it about once a month thankfully not as bad as it seems it could be. If it becomes consistent I am 100% bringing it in. Just so sporadic right now. Sorry to hear you fellas have to deal with this everyday. Surprised more people haven't responded.
