I've driven the 2014 5.6 (non-Sport). I can sum that one up pretty quickly.

- Great looks inside & out (I loved that silver-rubbed wood trim).
- V8 sounds great.
- Handles like a boat (I've heard the sport is better).
- About as fast with a V8 as most of the competition with 6 cylinder engines.
- Absolutely miserable gas mileage.

Great articles. Interesting that Motor Trend is reporting an A6 3.0T 0-60 time of 4.7sec. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any MT tests for the S6. However, the Audi web site lists the S6 4.0T at 4.7sec and the A6 at 5.5sec. That's a pretty significant difference between MT testing and Audi's reported numbers - although I know Audi tends to be conservative. I think it seems unlikely we could apply a 0.8 differential to the S6, which would take it to 3.9sec......seems unlikely.

Probably a stretch, but with nothing to indicate otherwise, it may be reasonable to expect that the A6 and S6 deliver similar performance. As a result, does it make sense to spend the extra $ on the S6?

Car and Driver measured the 0-60 time for the 2015 Infiniti Q70L 5.6 AWD to be 4.8 seconds.
They measured the 0-60 time for the 2013 Audi S6 to be 3.7 seconds.

C&D got 3.7s from the S6 (pre-facelift). It should be another 0.1s quicker for 2016. I haven't seen a MT test of the S6, but they got 3.5s from the S8 and 3.9s from the S7:

Thanks for confirming those S6 times. For bragging rights, if nothing else, having a < 4.0Ssec time provides some value even if it is a assisted by launch control.

I've test driven a 2013 S6 and didn't see the launch control (but wasn't really looking for it). Can someone confirm that launch control is standard on all S6 models?

Launch control is standard. It's the combo of launch control and AWD that helps produce such crazy 0-60 numbers. However, the rolling start (5-60) is pretty good on these cars as well. The 4.0T is definitely underrated.

The 3.0T in the A6 is a very strong motor, and likely underrated. However, having driven both an A7 and my own S6, there is not even a comparison. The 4.0T is far, far stronger than the 3.0T. The 4.0T is also much quicker in my S6 than the 5.2 FSI in my former D3 S8, despite the S6 having a lower rated power (420 vs. 450). One or one and a half seconds difference in 0-60 may not sound like a big difference, but it's a huge difference from the seat of your pants.

I've got to disagree with you, "One or one and a half seconds difference in 0-60" sounds like a HUGE difference.

APR states the S6 dynos around 480-hp stock... far cry from the claimed 420 by Audi!

Definitely feels more like 480, based on the performance.
