Default T Shaped Plastic coolant connector at rear of engine block Failure

I was literally on my way to the dealership to pick up 2 of the notorious plastic coolant t-shapped fittings, when the one in my car (118,000 miles) failed and I lost all my coolant.

I am having trouble re-assembling the components. For those of you who may know, is there a trick to re-installing the thick green painted retaining clip that holds the male portion of the water sensor into the top of the T shaped plastic connector?

I thought re-assembly would be the reverse of removal, but I can't seem to get the damn clip back in. I have matched the part numbers of the old and new T shaped connectors, and they also visually match. I did remove the old O ring and install a new o ring, and have pushed the sensor as far down into the cavity as it will go. The problem really seems to be the diameter of the opening, not really the location of the sensor. As the clip expands around the shaft of the sensor it is digging into the interior side of the circular opening. This click is really thick and does not want to bend.

TIA,

manny

Default I couldn't get the circlip back in either.

What I did was cut off the "legs" of the clip so it slides in and I have a worm drive clamp around the circular temp sender housing to prevent the circlip from falling out.

This was a last-minute repair literally hours before I went on a 1300 mile roadtrip! It's held for 2 months with no leaks so I'm not gonna mess with it. I do have another spare T and unabused circlip onhand however.

Default I don't get it... There wasn't enough clearance to push the temp sender through.

You'll have to head up to the Twin Cities sometime to show me how it's done.

Jeff D might be hosting a MN Audi thing at his shop later this summer up in Rockford, MN.

Default ok, it's been a year since I did this job, perhaps I

am mixing this up with some of the other 1000 auto repair experiences over the last 20 years..
;-) Seriously though I don't remember any issues getting things back together.

Turn the T-piece 90 degrees sideways and slip the clip around the outside of the slits with the sensor in place. Only the inward curved parts of the clip slips in from the outside through the slits in the T-piece to keep the sensor from popping out. The new clip is a wider black plastic piece available from www.worldimpex.com for only $1.25 and probably not much more from the dealer. MGH
