Any help with these issue? Anyone else have them?
Hey guys! I have a 2001 Cactus Green S4. My ex husband was a complete idiot that never fought for anything when we took the car back for work when it was under warranty. I hope some may be able to help me. First my check engine light will come on for anywhere from two weeks to a month and then go off for a few weeks. When I took it to get the oil changed they ran the code and said it was emissions...so I just try to put in Lucas Fuel Injection cleaner every couple weeks to clean it out. After running that through it usually did the trick, but since last month the light has not gone off. Another problem the car had when we took it back to the dealership was when you would fill up the tank completely full, in the summer (being in Phoenix it would be HOT) the car would start to sputter and stale out. So whenever I would get gas, I would just make sure not to fill it up all the way. Also, after filling the car up and pulling it into the garage, the whole garage would smell like gas. The garage at the dealership looked at this and said it was something with the lines going to from the gas tank....and for some unknown reason those were not covered under warranty. I for the life of me did not understand this because to me that is a safety issue, but again my ex did not fight it. So now with my check engine light on when I first start the car and drive and for the first 5 or so minutes if I stop at a red light I can smell exhaust/gas coming into the car. I know they just had the recall on the passat for around the same year, and know that the passat and s4 are on the same platform...does anyone think that the s4 may have the same issues???

Sounds like its all related. EVAP system problems.
The EVAP system handles fuel tank vapor emissions.
Bring it to a competent shop that can fix the actual problem (the fuel injector cleaner won't do anything to help).

Maybe try replacing the rubber gasket on top of the fuel tank cover. Its pretty easy and cheap.
Lift up the carpet in the trunk, near the rear passenger seat. Once you remove this black cover, youll see the fuel tank cover, with fuel lines coming out of it. The gasket is under that cover.
