Default Anyone ever replace their rear pads?

The Bentley CD isn't very specific. Do I need to open up the bleed valve or something? I can't get that piston to move.

I even bent a piston spreader (from Sears)

You have to turn the piston clock-wise while pushing in

Default I just did mine using that specific threaded tool made for Audi's etc.

Not the square cube one, but the one made to turn and push the piston at the same time, and it still took some effort. But it wasn't necessary to open the bleed valve.

Default You can use needle nose pliers to twist the piston a little and then tighten the screw

on the piston spreader. If it's still not in far enough, twist the piston a little more and then use the spreader again.

I watched a mechanic at Matrix Engineering do mine last week using the tool from Sears and he went back and forth between twisting and using the spreader maybe 3 or 4 times before he got the piston far enough out to get the caliper over the rotor.

I know he used the Sears tool because he couldn't find his in the shop and we went over to Sears to get one.

Default Doh! I just put the car back together

I may be able to borrow someones Audi tool tomorrow, but if I can't, I'll definately pick up a new spreader from Sears and try with some pliers.

Thanks for the tip!

Default use the tool and take cap off brake fluid reservoir

if reservoir is near full, suck some out with a turkey baster lest it spill onto the paintwork

Default yup... the right tools make all the difference

I use the following tool that twists and pushes the caliper down at the same time.

Also, I use a ratcheting 13mm box wrench below to quickly remove & replace the caliper mounting bolts.

With these tools, I can change my rear brakes in no time.

I brought my tools to Thunderhill on Friday but felt too tired to change back to stock pads with all the wind & rain.
