Not that you should believe everything you read - synthetic oils

I have been reading that the new Mobil 1 isn't as good as the old formula. This is from numerous sources/web sites etc.
Anyway, I have always read that Mobil 1 (old formula) is amongst the best, but the latest 'tri-synthetic' formula was developed in the interest of cost cutting. They got their cue from Castrol who markets their Syntec as a synthetic but is mineral based - just chemically altered. I personally have been a Mobil 1 supporter, but the last few months have pushed me away from them. It's crazy when you have synthetic blends out performing them in wear tests.
Looks like I'll be going elsewhere to get my oil since they all cost about the same.
Thoughts, Comments?

So it was a test of heavy weight oils prior to the Mobil1 Tri-synth. I'll buy the best...
oil if I can get solid test results of what's best. I've used Amzoil in the past, and some very knowledgable people use the stuff, so I'm still open to buying a few cases of it. I hope someone else has some good test data on this aspect mentioned, plus heat, boiling points, and all that stuff.

My 2 cents
Just about any fully synthetic oil will out perform regular brand oils. It is especially good in engines that produce a lot of heat (ie like our turbocharged Audis). That said there are a few things to think about. 1st would be to break in a new motor on dinosaur juice before using synthetic. This can be from 5000 to 15000 on some engines (usually with nickoseal liners) after that If monitary limitations are of little concern change to full synthetic or a blend for optimum protection from heat and breakdown within the oil. If byproducts of combustion didn't enter and contaminate oil, Synthetics would provide far superior performance to conventional oil. But due to these contaminates dumped into the oil synthetics should still be changed 7-10 thousand miles to keep acids from damaging bearings. It's funny but in the U.S. we change the oil in our cars from 3-5 thousand miles usually but in Europe it's more like 7 -10 thousand miles. Synthetics to me are the only way to go, the brand is of little importance one is almost as good as the next from what I have read. Look for the best price (usually it's Mobil 1) if you can spare the dough. It's a good investment and good for your turbo bearings..

I've been using Royal Purple 0w30 for the last few years and really like it!
I've been putting it in to my supercharged Miata and have been very happy with the results. I find that Mobil 1 tends to burn quite a bit. Does anyone else find this to be the case?
