Default New Hips and Some Project Updates

Hi Everyone,

Thought I would share some updates on our project car. As most of you know we ran this car under the <a href="http://awe-tuning.com">AWE-Tuning</a>/<a href="http://torque-factory.com">Torque-Factory</a>/<a href="http://giacusa.com">GIAC</a> banner in last years <a href="http://www.eurotuner.com/eventcoverage/160_0701_et_tuner_grand_prix_event_coverage/index.html">Eurotuner Grand Prix (aka ETGP) </a> and were awarded the overall win. Well, we knew that we needed to step it up for this year and we also have intentions of running in the <a href="http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com">Sport Compact Car Magazine</a> "Ultimate Street Car Challenge." Seems like it could be a great time competing with Skylines, NSX's, Evo's and STi's!

Brent and I spoke about how we wanted this project to proceed and we decided that we would keep it as a street car with A/C and leather for as long as we could get away with. Since these cars are serious porkers at a robust 3600 lbs we knew we needed A LOT more rubber on the ground. And after some hours spent measuring just about everything (more on this later) we took a leap.

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/rear.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/Brent_front.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://www.toyo.com">Toyo</a> was enlisted for some of there excellent RA1 tires in 275/35-18 mounted on <a href="http://enkei.com/RacingSeriesSpecs/NTO3+M.html">Enkei NT03+M 18 x 9.5" rally wheels</a> 19.6lbs per wheel and mid 300's for cost. This wheel has a unique reinforcing ring that stiffens the wheel dramatically.

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/frontwheel_fender_brakes.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

Since we wanted a streetable demeanor we needed some big pizza platter brakes to scrub off the heat absorbed from stopping a close to 600 horsepower (with more to come later) car that is built like a panzer. <a href="http://www.stasisengineering.com/Thumbnail_Preview.aspx?ID=8&YR=2001&MK=Audi&MD=S4& EN=51"> Front 370mm/14.5" Stasis Alcon Mono 6's.</a> with Moss-Brewed cooling ducts and <a href="http://stasisengineering.com/Category_Detail.aspx?id=8&YR=2001&MK=Audi&EN=51&PI D=47">298mm StaSis Alcon rears.</a>
With some tech help from the brake gurus we knew that if we kept the pizza platters below about 1000f we could use streetish pads for a package that can go from street to track. A big plus in an event like USCC where big performance that still drives to the market without squealing like a dump truck is awarded.

After spending quite a bit of time trying to figure out the best way to get cooling air to the front brakes I spent <b>wayyy too much</b> time getting this to work. Nice high pressure air too keep the brakes sub-atomic and still allows full lock to lock turns. Everything fits under the belly pan.

<img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/Psideschroudwhole.jpg"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/dside_schroud_wbrakeduct.jpg"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/brakeduct_behindIC.jpg"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/ducttoknuckle.jpg"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/alcon_stasis_enkei_toyo_por.jpg">

Stasis-Alcon, 275 Toyo, 9.5" Enkei Rally Wheel ****!! Check out the clearance between the caliper and the wheel. Hard to fit two quarters in there!

After we did our best to get the fronts to clear we found we needed to put 20mm of spacer up front for the tire to clear the upright or else there was no other way it was going to work... Since we had a deadline for a track day out came the power tools. We could replace fenders later and keep AWr's eyes from burning out and keep dead engineers from rolling over.

<img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/img049.jpg">

After a little incident on turn 9 at Big Willow we needed some body work.... Brent took it off of turn 9 at close to 100 mph! Everyone was very impressed when we drove it home! The body work came up a lot sooner than anyone would have liked.... But we had my old friend Rafael G. who owns <a href="http://local.yahoo.com/details;_ylt=AjpfjIq2ro9OtbOtt0dUDnOHNcIF?id=28743 283&state=CA&city=Culver+City&stx=new+age+body+sho p&csz=Culver+City%2C+CA+90232&fr=sfp&ed=QVjxq6131D yL2ZZOb.zE_fCTozFVsALVw20tJTH4hOa5V502MKg-&lcscb=71eYeLC8ky1">New Age Collision</a> on tap discuss repairs and options on how to clean up our front fenders.

While we were at it we really liked the hood from the Black GT car owned by <a href="http://wicked-motorsports.net">Mike from Wicked</a> so we gave <a href="http://www.fiberimages.com">Fiber Images</a> a call to get one of there lightweight carbon fiber vented hoods. We knew from past events when we run cars like this at max power during the summer they can only run at WOT for only a couple of laps before we need to cool it down. We figured the evacuation vent may help in cooling down the car. And shedding a couple more pounds off the nose of this front heavy heffer is always a great idea. We will see if the cooling is better...

<img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/hood_evacvent.jpg"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/pside_hoodgap_flare.jpg">

Not sure what these NACA duct are doing for us... But a wee bit more of cool air to our <a href="http://www.evoms.com/marketplace/Marketplace.asp?Now=6%2F2%2F2007+11%3A40%3A06+AM&P arentID=%7B47BD0DE5%2D2814%2D4B9F%2D96FD%2DDDC32CF 94F27%7D&Curr=%7B47BD0DE5%2D2814%2D4B9F%2D96FD%2DD DC32CF94F27%7D">Evo V-Flo</a> can't hurt.

We also saw a set of these awesome hood latches on our friend Diego's car. They are made by <a href="http://www.aerocatch.com">Aerocatch</a> and are soooo much nicer than those ugly 1960's muscle cars hood pins...

<img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/Aerocatch_closed.jpg"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/Aerocatch_opening.jpg"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/Aerocatch_open.jpg">

Rafael and his team also made us this simple and effective hood prop-

<img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/Hoodprop.jpg">

Here are some shots of the flares (please note that the ride height is at drag settings as we were preparing for German Invasion)-

Here is the secret to our fast times : ) Also a nice place to mount the

<a href="http://www.stasisengineering.com/Category_Detail.aspx?id=4&YR=2001&MK=Audi&EN=51&PI D=88">StaSis Ohlin's</a> reservoir.

<img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/vflo_wsnork.jpg"><img src="http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d78/J_Moss/Brent/vflo_nosnork_ohlin.jpg">

I am expecting many of you guys to squawk about going RS4 wide body and how you would of, could of or we should of done that. But we are unwilling to spend that kind of money. New turbos and rods would go in before any $10,000+ body kit. Rafael and his crew treated us very fairly and we are extremely happy with their hard work. If any local people have any projects along similar lines I hope you give him a call.

Enjoy the picts. Let us know if you have any questions.
