TIPTRONIC TRANSMISSION F.A.Q by S4ORCE

Q: Can the TIP(Tip-Tronic) transmission handle Stage 3 power?
A: Some have been fine running full Stage 3 on only a upgraded TC(Torque Converter),others have been known to upgrade the VB(Valve Body) in addition to the TC(Torque Converter). Another option is to go with a full rebuild from (IPT, Level 10, or , 2 Bennet)
*Since there aren't many Stage 3 TIP's the clear answer to this is not as accurate compared to going Stage 3 with a 6 speed. The Stage 3 TIP's that have done only the TC upgrade and have gone with fueling is only Street Crawler (Cole)'s car. Other Full Stage 3 TIP's all have the rebuilt transmissions. There are also a couple Stage 3- cars that have only upgraded the TC due to a bad seal and seem to be running just fine. This all really boils down to not having enough proof either way. We need more modified TIPS out there and more data.*
-------------------------------------------------
Q: What is the weak spot on the TIP transmission?
A: The TC(Torque Converter) that came with the transmission from the factory is known to go bad due to a seal. The TC seal is an issue of a poorly designed seal rotting away, not being
blow from HP/TQ. The only way to fix/replace the seal is a complete TC build
or replacement. This is a reason many think the TC went bad. The only effect of the seal going is that "lock up" clutch will not consistantly work
on the highway. Considering this is ONLY place this works anyway. Cars were designed
for 40 years without lock up clutches. Only purpose is to lower the cruising RPM on the highway to help with fuel consumption.
-------------------------------------------------
Q: OMG WTF Was that clunk!?! and my center display is red! <Tranmission LIMP mode>
A: If this has happened to you, your heart probably dropped because the clunk is painful. This is known as LIMP mode, if the car zooms to the redline it can hit the rev limiter
before the shift happens. The ECU sees the redline contact and it puts the
transmission into limp mode. There are tuners working to fix this with some sort of tuning to the TCU. This happens mostly in the 1st to 2nd gear shift, and usually happens when you are chipped or at a higher level of power.
-------------------------------------------------
Q: Is your transmission is slipping in gear? The clutches in the TIP transmission might be shot. At this point you might need a rebuild =/ at one of the place below.
A: Level 10, IPT, 2 Bennet
-------------------------------------------------
Q: What are some transmission shops that work with the Audi TIP transmission?
A: Level 10, IPT, 2 Bennet
-------------------------------------------------
Q: About how much does a TC(Torque Conveter) upgrade cost?
A: IPT Charges $675.00 3Zero3 Charges $800
-------------------------------------------------
Q: About how much does a VB(Valve Body) upgrade cost?
A: IPT Charges $625.00
-------------------------------------------------
Q: About how much does a full rebuild a.k.a make the transmission bullet proof cost?
A: IPT Charges $3,795.00 + $675.00 for a TC
-------------------------------------------------
*These are just some of the questions that have came upto my mind, if there are any additions feel free to reply to the thread and add them*

questions on costs and a question reg. transmision slip symptoms?
Does the estimated cost mentioned from ITP for the TC and VB upgrade include labor to make the changes in their shop or would you need to add the labor to pull and swap out the parts as well? Any estimates as the number of hours to swap out the TC and VB?
Are the upgrade costs any higher than a "normal" TC and VB rebuild cost?
I have not run the codes but I have noticed that after driving for around 45 minutes, my commute home, I feel a delay or lag when leaving a light. The delay seems to last for a couple of seconds. It seems like the car does not want to move forward I can see the tach needle moving up but the car does not want to move forward. This typically happens after driving on the freeway for around 45 minutes on the freeway then once off the freeway at the second or third light. This happens in normal and tip shifting mode and no noise changes from normal driving. I have asked my mechanic about it but of course the car drives fine for him and typically no codes have popped up. Does this suggest the transmission is slipping any thoughts?
And thanks for the FAQ.
