Yep, Farb : FreeJD was right; there IS an easier way...
A week ago I was trying to replace my CV boot by the standard method (removing the bolt from the upper control arm). After wasting my afternoon fighting with the bolt, I decided to put everything back together and ask people on the forums. They pretty much agreed that the bolt can be a real pain in the a**. I was about to take a torch and hammer to it when Farb posted an alternative method. I am happy to say that it worked rather well.
THE METHOD:
Remove the large bolt from the wheel hub, take of the wheel.
Remove the inner CV joint from the transmission by unscrewing the six torx bolts.
Jack up the wheel hub as far as possible.
The axle will drop down, allowing you to pull it out from under the transmission.
Install in reverse order. I will post some pics and a better walk through in the tech section. But I was so excited about getting this done that I thought I would post about it.
Also, to remove the outer cv joint from the axle, put the large hub bolt back in and tighten it with an impact wrench. It will pop right off

under two hours is a safe bet
It takes a while to clean the CV joints and regrease them. I had to replace the inner cv washer seal because it had dry rotted. So you may want to have one of those on hand. It isn't very complicated and doesn't take all that long. If I were to do it again, the whole process would take well under an hour. But for the first time, I would give it about two.

Pray that your CV joint boots don't blow, or that the joint itself doesnt go bad, install is a pita.
